Bremerton Receives $2.6 million for Downtown Infrastructure

The Kitsap Sun reports on the City of Bremerton’s receipt of a federal grant for $2.6 million to help with infrastructure improvements to attract new business downtown.
The city announced Wednesday that it had received a $2.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration to help with work surrounding a 170-space parking garage under construction at the corner of Fourth Street and Park Avenue.
The announcement follows Tuesday’s news that the city could receive $1.3 million from a state transportation agency for work on lower Wheaton Way.
Mayor Patty Lent said the grant announced Wednesday could be used for wider sidewalks to match those on Pacific Avenue and putting utility lines underground, among other tasks. Design work has not begun yet.
All of the work, she said, is designed to attract commerce. In a statement she said the EDA’s partnership with the city “helps us achieve the goal of creating a more attractive downtown area that will bring more retail and residential development and enhance our tax base.”

From the Kitsap Sun:
PORT ORCHARD — By the end of the year, Kitsap County will have a comprehensive trail plan outlining routes for walkers, cyclists, and even equestrians from the south end of the county to trails already approved for North Kitsap. The trail system would include direct routes between Kitsap’s cities and unincorporated population centers to make it safe for bicyclists to get to and from work, as well as routes that spur off from the main connector trails to link to parks and recreational areas.

Jody Kahn at John Burns Real Estate Consulting filed this report based on interviews with construction executives. In essence it boils down to saying that difficulties with getting VA appraisals to come in at value are affecting many new construction home sales. This reflects the overall problems in the construction industry, the inability of home builders to compete on price with distressed property sales and a resale market that is still falling in price. Our experience in residential resale is that buyers of well priced homes are able to get VA financing.
