City of Bremerton $2.1 million budget shortfall

From the Kitsap Sun:
Members of the Bremerton City Council’s Finance Committee held a special meeting Tuesday and learned the city could be looking at a $2.1 million gap between general fund revenues and expenses in 2012.
Between now and the end of the year, the mayor and council members have to close that gap.
Becky Hasart, Bremerton’s financial services director, said when the mayor presents her 2012 budget to the council later this month, the numbers should be more realistic than they have been in the past.
“We are not going to overinflate revenues to make the budget balance,” she said.
Revenue projections for 2011 turned out to be more optimistic than reality. The city’s revenue projections now are about $124,000 short of the $33.8 million budget.

The trail system would include direct routes between Kitsap’s cities and unincorporated population centers to make it safe for bicyclists to get to and from work, as well as routes that spur off from the main connector trails to link to parks and recreational areas.

Jody Kahn at John Burns Real Estate Consulting filed this report based on interviews with construction executives. In essence it boils down to saying that difficulties with getting VA appraisals to come in at value are affecting many new construction home sales. This reflects the overall problems in the construction industry, the inability of home builders to compete on price with distressed property sales and a resale market that is still falling in price. Our experience in residential resale is that buyers of well priced homes are able to get VA financing.
