Progress on the New Manette Bridge

The Kitsap Sun updates us on the replacement bridge being constructed in Bremerton:

After months of building up from the Port Washington Narrows, crews on Monday set four 123-foot-long girders onto the pier nearest downtown, marking another milestone in the $57.8 million project.

Manson Construction’s Derrick Barge #24, capable of lifting 400 tons, hoisted the 330,000-pound concrete I-beams onto Pier 2 and will set four more Thursday on Pier 5, said Jeff Cook, project manager for the state Department of Transportation.

People walking across the original span, built in 1930, can now lean over the green railing and practically touch its replacement. That intimacy has captured neighbors, many of whom opposed trading a stately steel truss bridge for a concrete one. A small group watched Monday, clapping when the first girder was placed.
